In the Politics of Ethnic Discrimination in Sudan: A Justification for the Secession of South Sudan Dr. Dhieu Mathok Diing Wol shares his professional and personal insights into the long-held tensions between South Sudanese/Sudanese border nomads, the Dinka Malual and Reizegat. He is himself Malual, but this has not stopped him from attempting a balanced view of the conflict and its contributing factors. The discussion on slavery/abductions, before and during, Sudan’s second civil war (1983-2005) reflects the complexity of the issue which became an international concern during the decades-long conflict. Major players, including NGOs, faith-based activists, the UN, the Clinton and Bush administrations, the British parliament, and multiple media outlets, became involved, drawing a spotlight to an issue that had barely been known outside the country’s borders.

First published in 2009, prior to the independence of South Sudan, Dr. Wol has updated this second edition with his insights into the many post-independence tensions and conflicts, including the civil war that began in 2013.

Since the mid-90s, Dr. Wol has been appointed to many high-level positions including; as peace negotiator for the; 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA); the 2015 Agreement for Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (ARCSS); and the 2018 Revitalized – Agreement for Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R–ARCSS). He has worked in academic settings, in governments of Sudan, and after independence, South Sudan. Currently, he is the Secretary of South Sudan Mediation Committee on Sudan Conflicts and Minister of Investment in the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity of the Republic of South Sudan.

Description

The Politics of Ethnic Discrimination in Sudan: A Justification for the Secession of South Sudan addresses the historic and contemporary tensions between South Sudanese (African) and Sudanese (Arab) border ethnicities: the Dinka Malual and  Reizegat. By exploring the dynamics of colonialism, nomadism, civil war, slavery\abuductions, resource-sharing and politics, Dr. Wol (who is Malual), provides a nuanced and balanced perspective of a century-long, interethnic, cross-border conflict, situated in the heart of Africa. Insightful and informative, this is an essential read for anyone interested in the many, seemingly-intractable conflicts, like this one, that are located across the globe.
